Uzbekistan’s President to chair CIS summit
On December 18, Shavkat Mirziyoyev will preside over a videoconference session of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) Council of the Heads of State, the supreme decision-making body of the CIS.
The summit agenda includes evaluation of the current state and prospects of multifaceted relations within the association in the political, trade, economic, cultural and humanitarian realms, as well as in the joint counteraction to new threats and challenges.
In his speech, the head of our state is expected to outline Uzbekistan’s vision for long-term tasks the CIS ought to address, along with specific proposals for enhancing the practical cooperation.
The session will also help the heads of delegations discuss a draft 2030 concept of further development of the Commonwealth and an action plan for its implementation. The documents define strategic goals and key interaction aspects for the near and medium term.
Following the discussions, the participants intend to adopt joint statements on the 75th anniversary of the United Nations and on cooperation in the field of international information security. The leaders of CIS nations are anticipated also to take decisions on various aspects of the association’s activities, including on the venue for the next session of the Council of the Heads of State, in 2021.
This year, for the first time ever, our country assumed the responsible mission of presidency in the Commonwealth.
In spite of the intricacies associated with the pandemic, the Concept of Uzbekistan’s chairmanship in the CIS has been realized to the fullest extent.
Meetings of the Council of Heads of Government, Economic Council, the Council of Foreign Ministers, and other statutory and sphere-based bodies of the CIS took place with success.
A number of important documents were adopted, including the Economic Development Strategy, Priority Areas of Cooperation in Transport, Strategy for Cooperation in Tourism, Sports and Youth Policy, and many others – all are 2030-bound.
In general, about 60 multilateral events have been held, while over 70 documents been inked to facilitate the further advancement and consolidation of the CIS.
